Chapter 16

Jake lunged at the closing door, and he almost made it, but it closed before he could get a purchase on it. There was no handle, no hinges. He whirled, grabbing for the Vancouver pack Second, but he wasn’t there. “Where?” he growled.

Cujo was examining the wall to his left. “A sliding door,” he said. “It opened as soon as Abby crossed the threshold, and that bastard backed into it. Well planned and executed. They’ve done this before.”

Benny started to examine the door Abby had gone through. “It’s metal,” he said briefly.

Someone started laughing over a speaker. “Played you for fools, Second Lewis,” the voice said. “And all too easy. Or perhaps losing your Alpha isn’t as much of a tragedy as you’d like people to think?”

Jake rolled his shoulders to relax them. He had to play this right, and he wasn’t good with words. Not like Benny. Or Cujo.

Not like Abby.

“We could wait right here, and when she’s finished with you, you’ll be begging for us to take her back,” Jake said. He sensed Benny’s approval. Heartened, he went on, “So far the score is Abby 7, Alphas 0. And let’s face it, you’re nowhere near as dominant as Chairman Johannsen or Alpha Lebenev.”

“Or Alpha Stark. He was crazy at the end, but no one ever said he wasn’t plenty dominant,” Cujo added helpfully. “Zee Chen might be as dominant as Paul Lewis — but he was a whiny piece of shit.”

“True,” Jake agreed. “Mendoza wasn’t very dominant either. A tough man, though.”

“She didn’t actually kill Blue McDougal,” Benny objected as if this were a discussion they’d had before. “Does that even count? Okami killed him.”

“At her orders,” Jake pointed out. “And Okami Yoshida doesn’t take orders from many.”

“True,” Benny agreed. “So Alpha Chen? Do you think you’re more dominant than those men? Because I hear you weren’t even dominant enough to kill the Alpha you attacked and tried to call it a challenge.”

“Funny aren’t you?” the man growled. “But I have your Alpha, and you don’t. You might want to remember that.”

“Oh, I will,” Jake promised, the growl in his voice showed that his wolf was close to the surface. He reached out for Abby through their bond, but there was nothing.

He glanced at Benny, who had the best link to her after his own. Benny shook his head briefly. No. And without Abby, they couldn’t communicate with each other through their links either.

Well, there were the pack bonds — he could feel their distress there. Could feel how close they all were to shifting. But there was nothing to shred. “Back out,” he murmured.

“Too late,” Cujo said almost soundlessly. “They dropped a door behind us too. We’re trapped here.”

Jake’s jaw clenched. Five shifters trapped in a small space, while their Alpha was taken from them with only one unreliable guard? He should have gone ahead of her and opened the door. But Benny shook his head. Could he hear his thoughts? Probably didn’t take a mind reader to know he was kicking himself.
